Ben Lee was asleep on a sofa in the Knitting Factory when his publicist introduced me to him for a photo shoot. I felt bad -- he was totally exhausted and jet-lagged, having just arrived in New York from Australia earlier that day with nonstop interviews for his new Grand Royal album 'Grandpaw Would". I asked Ben if we could just take a quick portrait and I'd leave him alone. He smiled and said that was the first cool thing anyone had done for him all day. He was seventeen at the time.
