trent - rococo period shoot
photographed by ned schenck

Captured through the cracked lenses of an odd assortment of old cameras found on the street or purchased at flea markets (a 1957 Polaroid Land Camera, a 1962 Crown Graphic 4x5, a 1966 Mamiya C330, a 1972 Minolta SRT-101, and a 1920's Brownie modified with SX-70 Polaroid back), Schenck's photographs are often characterized by long exposures and severe lighting, providing an unsettling and chaotic mood mirroring the atmosphere of the East Village late at night. The resulting images from this series accentuate the beauty, style and recklessness of Downtown youth with portraits including punks, skaters, squatters, hustlers, heroin addicts, club kids, and emerging artists.

These portraits somehow manage to blur the lines between documentary realism and fiction. As a photographer, I prefer to play the role of detached observer, peering in from the outside into a world of downtown subculture. At the same time, I am often photographing friends or 'invading' the personal space of my subjects, creating an inherent conflict of interest within the imagery. I think there is an emotional center in the work, and I attempt to reveal a story without giving away too much.
